COLLAGE: No Longer Silent

Give voice, please vote. NO LONGER SILENT is a new collage series starting with a first work that is titled, “Whitewashed,” a compositional art piece (24” x 24” x 2-1/2”) that targets systemic racism in our country.

At the start of the year, and more so once the coronavirus hit, my husband (Marfa poet David Marwitz) started collecting images and quotes that addressed the social injustice climate of the 2020 election year. My name is Darlene Marwitz, artist-writer and co-owner of THE MARFA LINE. Together, David and I, have decided to “no longer be silent” during the life-changing year that is 2020.

Plus, developed for this weekend’s MADE IN MARFA online exploration, please follow Darlene (me!) in the studio with step-by-step instruction, ideas and possibilities so that you, too, can make personalized works of art via the creativity of collage. Be informed, get inspired, follow along in the studio as I demonstrate examples in my posts per the “in the studio” tab!

The goal of this new series is to create multiple art pieces that confront additional social issues, from women’s rights to border immigration and beyond. Diverse collage techniques will be explored, but each work will repeat the 24” square format on birch board. Additional details of my newly completed first piece, “Whitewashed” below:
