DIY Collage: Boards and Other Substrates

Ample tutorials exist online for collage techniques, so I’m only covering a few basics that apply to my work. The first thing you need is a sound substrate to work on. I prefer “cradled” birch boards (with deep sides), but flat boards, canvas boards, or even a scrap of masonite will do. (Avoid stretched canvases because they are difficult to dry flat; un-stretched canvas is equally problematic when stretched.)

I’ve even used watercolor paper for delicate “mosaic” type collage work (tape edges to a board while working or use a watercolor block), but the constant warping while applying glues and coatings is challenging.

For the purposes of demonstration, I’ll be using a cradled board.

Most any stiff substrate/surface can be used.
